Costco is the rare store where the payment method itself changes the math, because the warehouse accepts Visa cards only. Any Visa card works at the register, but the store's own card, the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi, is built around the warehouse and pays the best rates on the spending Costco members actually do.
The card's rates are simple and strong for a card with no annual fee beyond the membership itself. You earn 5 percent back on gas at Costco, 4 percent on other eligible gas and electric vehicle charging, on a combined 7,000 dollars per year before dropping to 1 percent, 3 percent on restaurants and eligible travel, 2 percent at Costco and Costco.com, and 1 percent on everything else. Gas is the standout: a household that buys most of its fuel at Costco or at regular gas stations can earn hundreds a year from fuel alone, and Costco's pump prices are usually among the lowest in town before the reward is even counted.
The membership tier is the second half of the equation. Gold Star membership costs 65 dollars a year. Executive membership costs 130 dollars, and adds a 2 percent annual reward on qualified Costco, Costco.com, and Costco Travel purchases, capped at 1,250 dollars per year. The upgrade costs 65 dollars more than Gold Star, so it pays for itself once your qualified spending passes 3,250 dollars a year, roughly 270 dollars a month. Gasoline, food court purchases, and a few other categories never earn the Executive reward, so do not count fuel toward that break-even.
Stack the two together and the in-club rate is 4 percent: 2 percent from the card plus 2 percent from Executive membership, on qualified purchases. The card's reward arrives once a year as a certificate you redeem in the warehouse, and the Executive reward arrives with your renewal notice. The timing is slow, but the rates are high, and for a household that already shops at Costco weekly, the combination is hard to beat with any general cash back card.
Three details people get wrong. First, the card's gas rate applies only at real gas stations and Costco fuel stations. Gas bought at superstores, grocery stores, or warehouse clubs other than Costco does not earn the 4 percent rate. Second, Costco's warehouses take Visa only, so an American Express or Mastercard rewards card cannot be used there at all, no matter how good its grocery rate looks on paper. Third, warehouse clubs do not count as supermarkets for other cards either. An Amex Gold Card earns its supermarket rate at real supermarkets, not at Costco, so the warehouse trip needs its own plan.
The practical routine is short. Pay with the Costco Anywhere Visa card at Costco and at gas stations, keep Executive membership if your qualified spending clears 3,250 dollars a year, and let the annual certificates land. Check the current terms before you apply, since reward caps and membership fees do move over time, but the structure has been stable for years: cheap fuel, a strong no-fee card, and a membership reward that stacks on top.
