Amex once-per-lifetime welcome bonus rule
You can generally earn the welcome bonus on a specific American Express card only once, ever. The application terms state the offer is not available to applicants who have or have had that card. Reaching the card by upgrade or downgrade counts as having had it, even though the change itself paid no bonus.

Who it applies to
Anyone applying for any American Express card, personal or business, who has held that exact card before.
How to count
- Check whether you have ever held this exact card, including via upgrade or downgrade.
- If yes, the welcome bonus is generally unavailable; Amex usually shows an eligibility pop-up before you submit.
- No-lifetime-language (NLL) targeted offers are the main exception; they bypass the rule looking backward only.
- Some cardholders report eligibility returning after roughly 7 years, but that is not a published reset.

This page is general information. Issuer rules change without notice, and actual approval is decided by the issuer's underwriting. Read the terms on the card you are applying for before you apply.FAQ
If I cancel the card, can I earn its bonus again later?
Generally no. The restriction follows having held the card, not whether it is still open. An NLL offer is the usual way back.
Does the pop-up mean I cannot get the card at all?
No. The pop-up warns about the bonus only. You may still be approved for the card itself, just without the welcome offer.
