Amex charge-card families work like a one-way ladder. If you have previously held any Platinum card, you may not be eligible for a welcome offer on the Green, Gold, or any Platinum card. If you have previously held the Gold card, you may not be eligible for a welcome offer on the Green or Gold. Business cards are not affected by these family rules.
