Marriott cross-issuer bonus rules

Chase + American Express · Bonus eligibility

Marriott cards are issued by both Chase and American Express, and the bonus restrictions cross the issuer boundary. As a rule of thumb, if you received a welcome bonus on any Marriott co-brand card (either issuer) within the past 24 months, you may not qualify for another Marriott bonus. Each issuer also adds shorter holds: holding or recently opening the other issuer's Marriott card (30 days for holding, 90 days for approvals) can block a bonus too.

Unpublished rule: the issuer does not publish this rule. It is documented by at least two independent guides below — treat it as a reported pattern, not a guarantee.

How to count

  • Find your most recent welcome bonus on ANY Marriott card, either issuer; add 24 months.
  • Check whether you hold the other issuer's Marriott card now, or opened one in the past 90 days.
  • Amex Marriott cards also carry Amex once-per-lifetime terms on top of the 24-month cross rule.
  • Chase Marriott cards are additionally subject to Chase 5/24.

FAQ

Can I earn a Chase Marriott bonus and an Amex Marriott bonus in the same year?

Usually no: the 24-month cross-issuer clock runs in both directions, so one Marriott bonus generally blocks another for 24 months.

Does the Marriott rule replace 5/24 or once-per-lifetime?

No. All of them stack: Chase cards still face 5/24, Amex cards still face once-per-lifetime, and the Marriott cross rule sits on top.
